Homemade Strawberry Jam

Today my husband and I made strawberry jam, it was fun and it turned out super yummy. Since we're newbies at this, we went with the no cook version until we get used to things.

For mothers day my wonderful hubby purchased me some books I wanted at the Tractor supply store, one being the ball preserving recipe book where we saw the strawberry jam recipe. I think he was more excited than I was since he's the jam eater in the house but we made it a family thing to do thing together. So off to the grocery store we went to pick up supplies and started as soon as we got back home. Fun, easy and tastes good too? Wow this is amazing.

Not sure what is on our list next, but I'm thinking something with herbs but since we don't at this current time, have our own garden we purchase from the farmers market or mass chain grocery stores for our ingredients, but hey it's a start.

Happy Homesteading!

Compost bin...check... NEXT a homemade bug repellant spray

I have to admit this is getting to be so much fun, learning new ways to be self-reliant and making my own things. Yesterday I got the compost bin finished and didn't need the carbon filters just some holes all around with some browns and greens to start it up and it's complete.

Today I made a homemade bug repellant recipe I found on a wonderful website (link down below) called the "Vinegar of the Four Thieves" which has a story behind it. I have it sitting for approx. 3 weeks till I can strain the herbs and get to using it before mosquitos and other yucky bugs come at us with the warm weather.

If you have a tried and true recipe, please let me know if the comments below, until next time... Live Simply!

Kitchen Composting Bin

As I learn many new ways to live self-sufficiently, I am really into making my own homemade things and next on my list is a composting bin.

Along my travels to many and I mean many YouTube videos, groups on facebook and various homesteading websites I figured I might as well get the feel for it before getting our own homestead and then being clueless or trying so many things at once so here goes.

So as of right now I'm heading to tractor supply to pick up some carbon filters to do a makeshift compost bin using an old 5 gallon pickle bucket with removable lid, where I'll cut some holes in the top and attach the filter.

If anyone has any tips or tricks, Please send them my way..... until then have an awesome day!

DIY Homemade Face or Hiney Wipes... the family loves them

Ok so in my adventure to become a little more self-sufficient, I came across a small tutorial while watching a YouTube video about hiney wipes but they are also great for your face as well since it contains all natural ingredients. Here's how ya make em'.

Small container with tight lid
Quilted Napkins and/or paper towels
16 oz. cup
Squirt of sweet almond oil
Dr. Bronners liquid castile soap (any scent / your choice)
Lavender Essential Oil
Tea Tree Essential Oil
Vitamin E liquid (optional)
Water

How to make:
Fill up your container with the napkins or paper towels
In a cup put in a dash of sweet almond oil, squirt of Dr. Bronners liquid castile soap, a few drops of tea tree and lavender essential oils, a few squirts of vitamin E liquid and mix, add water and mix again.

Pour cup contents onto the papers towels/napkins and make sure to lift a few so each one gets the mixture on them. Sometimes the bottom towels don't get wet so I usually lift the bottom ones and pour the mixture on the bottom of the container.

These not only are good for any part of the body but are compostable as well :) Be sure not to flush these down the toilet as it may cause clogging.
